Hospital Bag(s)…

If you look around on the Internet there are countless lists of what you should pack in your hospital bag. The hospital I’m going to don’t have a lot of space in their rooms, and so ask that you pack two bags – one for labour and one with the extra things you’ll need if they have to keep you in after the birth. I think quite a few hospitals ask this but most of the lists I found online were for one big bag. They were also all quite different…some were lengthy, some were concise, some were basic but offered suggestions for “extras” to make you feel more at home in the hospital or birth centre.

Something that they all had in common was the advice that you have your bag packed and ready by week 36…

I’m now 37 weeks pregnant and, even though I started planning my bag about weeks ago, I still have no bag packed. Worse than that, I don’t actually have everything that I need for it. I HAVE written my lists though…

I think I fell into the trap of feeling far too organised, far too early. I thought that I had LOADS of time to get it all and get the bag packed. I thought wrong.

Anyway, here are my lists for the things that I think I will need in my labour bag (including a few things for the baby that we’ll need straight away) and some things that Luke will need…

Labour bag for me:

  • Birthplan
  • Maternity notes (I carry these in my handbag all the time anyway)
  • Lipbalm
  • Massage oil
  • Hot water bottle
  • Water spray bottle
  • Tissues/wipes
  • Hair bobbles
  • Brush
  • A couple of sanitary pads
  • 2 sleep bras (because one might get wet if I can use a pool)
  • Pants
  • Labour “outfits” (I haven’t put a lot of thought into this, but maybe a HUGE loose t-shirt, a nightie…I’m hoping for a water birth so the sleep bra might be enough but I’ve seen a few people recommend taking different things to wear in case your initial choice isn’t comfy)
  • Slippers
  • Dark robe
  • A towel (some hospitals supply these)
  • Paper/notepad and pen
  • iPod/CDs
  • Phone
  • TENS machine
  • Toiletry bag (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, moisturiser, shampoo, conditioner…all travel sized…and mascara to make myself feel slightly human if I feel like I need it after the birth)
  • My swiss ball (deflated!)
  • A pillow (to get comfy and because it’ll be a bit of home)

Baby things for after birth:

  • 2 nappies and sacks
  • Nappy cream
  • Some cotton wool balls
  • Newborn sized vest
  • Newborn sized onesie
  • 0-3 month sized vest
  • 0-3 month sized onesie
  • Going home outfit (just in case we get to leave after a few hours)
  • Scratch mitts
  • Muslin square
  • Nail scissors
  • Cuddly toy

Luke’s bag:

  • Money (including change for vending machines)
  • Hypnobirthing “Gatekeeper” card (it has reminders for affirmations etc)
  • Phone
  • Phone numbers on paper
  • Notepad and pen
  • Change of clothes (we might be there a while!)
  • Deoderant
  • Straws (so I can drink without needing to think about it too much)

…and we are also going to take a small cooler bag with snacks and water bottles in…

Then there’s the stuff we’ll need in a second bag for a stay in hospital…

For me:

  • 2 nursing nighties
  • A nursing bra
  • 2 pairs bed socks
  • 2 pairs normal socks
  • 5 pairs of pants
  • Breast pads (about 10 pairs)
  • 10 sanitary pads
  • Nipple cream
  • Phone charger
  • Money
  • A plastic bag (for dirty laundry)
  • Books and magazines

For the baby:

  • 15 nappies and sacks
  • Cotton wool balls
  • A hat
  • Vests and onesies (I have no idea how many to pack…)
  • Another pair of scratch mitts
  • Few more muslins
  • 3 dribble bibs
  • A cardigan

We’ll leave this bag in the car along with the car seat and a blanket. Mom is going to drop us off at the hospital (a 40 minute drive from our house) so we’ll just have to call her once he’s born then, when she gets back, Luke can go out to her and either bring in the car seat and blanket (preferable) or get our 2nd bag (in the event of a hospital stay).

If we do have to stay there’s the possibility that he’ll be able to stay with us too, so we may need to think about packing a few things for him…

Unfortunately it’s not as simple as just packing…

I still need to:

  • Wash the baby clothes and blankets
  • Work out what music I want
  • Put the music on the iPod
  • Figure out labour/going home clothes
  • Make a list of snacks we can take

And we still need to buy:

  • TENS machine
  • Nursing bras
  • A dark robe
  • Nipple cream
  • Cotton wool balls
  • More muslin squares
  • A small soft sided cooler bag

I think tomorrow is going to be all about getting prepared…wish us luck!

Baby Clothes and Things…

A while ago I wrote a list of lists that I needed to compile (and act upon)…one of which was a list of the things we already have for the baby, as well as the things we are still to get.

On the face of it that’s one list, but in reality it’s several. I like lists – the more I can make the better.

This post focuses on the clothing side of things.

Thanks to generous friends and numerous shopping trips we have managed to amass quite a stash of baby clothes, but as they’ve come in in dribs and drabs (and in lots of different sizes, right up to 2 years old) I didn’t think that we had all that we need to get us through the first few months…

our current stash...

our current stash…

I’ve had a look on several websites to gauge what people recommend for the first few weeks/months and they all suggest different things, so I have looked at all of them to come up with a basic list of what we might need. Most sites say something like “4-6 onesies” but we don’t have a tumble drier so I have slightly upped the numbers in most cases to account for washing taking longer to dry…

  • 12 x onesies (they can be day and night wear)
  • 8 x vests/body suits
  • 6 x t-shirts/tops
  • 6 x leggings/stretchy trousers
  • 3 x outfits (not really necessary, but very cute)
  • 3 x cardigans/jackets
  • 8 x socks/booties
  • few pairs of scratch mitts
  • 3 x jersey cotton hats
  • a sun hat
  • 2 or 3 sleeping bags
  • blankets/shawls (light cotton ones are best…you can always layer up)

TIP: babies outgrow small sizes (or skip them completely) so go for 0-3 month size to start with.

…a lot of sites I looked at were American and suggested something called a baby gown for the first few weeks until the cord stump falls off, but they don’t seem to be something that’s readily available in the UK. I have decided to leave them off my list as I can’t seem to find them for sale over here.

So, this is what we currently have…

  • 5 x onesies
  • 9 x short sleeve vest
  • 1 x long sleeve vest
  • 2 x t-shirts
  • 8 x pairs of socks
  • 2 x scratch mitts
  • 3 x jersey hats
(mostly) newborn stuff...

(mostly) newborn stuff…

0-3 months:

  • 9 x onesies
  • 8 x short sleeve vest
  • 3 x long sleeve vest
  • 2 x light cardigan
  • 1 x thick cardigan
  • 2 x short sleeve body suit
0-3 month stuff...

0-3 month stuff (and some 3-6 on the right too)…

…we also have one fleece and one cellular blanket (not pictured), a micro fibre blanket and one sleeping bag…

…and a couple of hooded towel/wash mitt sets (both identical…)…

…two of my favourite things are the coming home outfit that Luke and I bought for him (stripy-guitar-picky designs) and a little blue knitted cardigan that my Nan made years ago. She died when I was 25 so that in particular is really special to me…

I don’t think we’ll get any more newborn things as we have more than enough of those (even if he’s tiny we’ve got enough to get us through the first few days), but we’ll definitely need to get a few more 0-3 month size things like…

  • another pack (or two) of onesies
  • some tops
  • some trousers
  • a couple of outfits
  • another sleeping bag or two
  • some more scratch mitts

I still have a lot of other, non-clothing stuff to think about, but I’m definitely feeling a lot more in control of the clothing situation at least!…we’re one step closer to being ready…

…but I still can’t quite believe that we will have a baby joining us at some point in the next 4-9 weeks…

Being Productive!…

Last night Luke was out with his friends so I used the free time I had to watch Harry Potter (yay) and work on some of the lists I’d set myself.

I did a massive amount of googling and collated a list of EVERYTHING that the top searches recommend taking into hospital with you. Then I narrowed it down to the things I think I’ll need (most of the stuff actually…there wasn’t much narrowing), so now all I need to do is break it down into several smaller bags (one for the birth/one in case I need to stay in hospital/one for the baby/one for Luke/one for food)…

…then I need to figure out what I already have (not much) and what we need to buy (most of it).

Once I’d done that I googled what you need for a baby for the first few months and, predictably, collated those lists into one big one, then narrowed it down to suit us (e.g…we’re not getting a pram or a baby bath, and I’m going to breastfeed exclusively so bottles, teats and sterilisers won’t be needed at first).

I left that one at that. I was feeling pretty motivated, but not quite motivated enough to start going through all the stuff we’ve already aquired for our little.

Then – inspired by the things we need, a desire to be more ecological, and wanting to get away from the lists – I started hunting around for advice and information on reusable baby wipes…and then I went shopping for cheap face cloths and cute cotton flannel fabric (more about that in another post)…

I also researched sleeping bags vs. sheets/blankets, picked out some nursing bras for sleeping in (and to wear during labour), and decided to use reusable breast pads rather than  disposable ones.

I did all that AND at some point during the evening I found time to clean the kitchen…

…and I had KFC for dinner…

…it was a good night!

At the end of it (I could have carried on but Luke wanted the light out) I put the laptop away, lay back on the bed, and felt a little bottom poking out the side of my belly. All of a sudden I realised how scrunched up I had been while sitting at the computer and felt VERY worried indeed. I always put the laptop up on a box so I’m not having to bend over it, but that doesn’t necessarily stop me from sitting in a rubbish position. Could I have squished the baby?!…

I panicked.

I tried to relax and wait for him to wriggle or kick. I think I relaxed for about 10 seconds before grabbing my phone and asking google if it was possible to squash my unborn child by sitting wonky.

The answer is no…but I still had to visit several websites and forums before I’d believe it.

And then he rolled over and kicked me in the rib.

A List…of Lists…

Today marks the start of week 30 of my pregnancy. I’ve got 7-12 weeks of pregnancy left (that’s hoping that our little doesn’t decide to put in an early appearance), which is loads (LOADS) of time to plan and organise.

Yeah right

I should have started already, but I haven’t, so this is a list of lists I need to write (and then put into action)…

  • baby stuff we need for the early days
    • (sub list) baby stuff we already have
    • (sub list) baby stuff we still need to get
  • things I want to MAKE before his arrival
    • (sub list) crafting supplies I need
  • things I need to DO before his arrival
  • what to put in my hospital bag (and baby’s…and Luke’s)
    • (sub list) all the stuff we need to get for the hospital bag(s)
  • labour music playlist

…and then there’s all the things I need to find out more about (like do we use sheets or a sleeping bag? what washing liquid should we get? what’s the best fabric for making baby wipes? how do I use a sewing machine?)…

…and all that is just the THEORY of us getting organised…

At least I’m realising this now and not in 5 or 6 week’s time. I shall report back accordingly.

Impending List Warning…

Last night I got it into my head that I’d write a ‘What’s in the Van’ list, so you can get an idea of…

a) what you might need for a trip in a camper van…

b) what extras you can take to make your trip even comfier…

c) the sheer amount of stuff you can hide away in these motorised tents…

I’ve started to compile this list (mostly from memory at the moment – I wasn’t keen on going out into the cold, dark night to do an inventory of what’s hiding under the rock’n’roll bed) but at the moment it is very VERY long and it’s only going to get longer…

In other news, I’ve bought my 2013 diary today and I’ve already started to fill in my days and weekends off.

I’m incredibly excited!
